Founded in 1988 by its tireless leader, Danny Gilbert and Tony Tobin (now a consultant at the firm), G+T is an independent Australian law firm with offices in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. 

G+T is the flashy, hip kid on the Australian legal market block synonymous with exciting buzzwords like “innovation”, “tech-savvy” and “transformative”. For example, G+T’s invested time and resources to develop a due diligence program called dd – we have no idea how good it is, but hey, its the thought that counts. 

Beneath all this glitz and glamour though, let’s just say that this firm will make you earn your dollars. The rather notorious long hours and firmly entrenched meritocratic system at G+T are hallmarks of this mid-tier powerhouse. 

On the plus side, you will be paid top of the market for your troubles and the bonuses are generous and plentiful should you have earned your keep. That is, if you can handle the leaner teams and often crushing deadlines as a result of the perennial understaffing issues that these law firms tend to experience. 

G+T recognises and rewards high achievers and the ambitious, so make sure you’re a motivated individual before you apply within. You’ll learn quickly on the job here with work that may not be typical for someone at your level (put your floaties on for the deep end of the pool) with a flatter hierarchy than its competitors and plenty of work involving direct contact with your supervising Partner. For some, it’s a challenge that they can’t wait to overcome, for others, it’s just plain stressful. 

While not a traditional Big 6 firm, G+T has been knocking on that door ever so louder in the past decade. As a result, it often finds itself on marquee deals opposite your typical behemoths, HSF, KWM and Allens, and has especially found popularity amongst the PE and VC clients. 

Of course, being a (upper) mid tier, you will do your fair share of mid-market work, but thats not a bad thing for a junior lawyer to cut their teeth on. If transactional work is your cup of tea, and you’re in it for the money, G+T will satiate your inner deal junkie lying within, with Band 1 Chambers rankings across all the transactional practice areas you would want to work in. 

Your time here at the firm won’t carry the same prestige as a Big 3 firm, but G+T is not a name to be sneezed out. We’ve heard that Partners here can earn about $2.3 million to $2.5 million in a good year, up there with some of the bigger players in town.
